Got home last night to the news that I am a grandmother...nine times over!!!
My hamsters, Dora and John Travolta, are the proud parents of now just seven wriggling pink, hairless things :-)
The last time Dora gave birth, there were four babies...all died within 4 weeks. I'm hoping that with the general law of averages, I'll get at least one from this new litter to reach adolescence. I'll post a picture as soon as I buy my super-astig gigicam.
Thing is, these rodents eat the babies they think won't survive. Shudder. I don't really mind it if that happens, just don't let me see the actual act. Understandable naman eh, if that's how nature deals with small, weak mammals...
I wonder, though, what it is about people that can't stand that. If a pet owner is asked, for example, what he/she would prefer between (a) feed the dead hamster babies to the family cat or (b) just throw it away, the majority choice would be to throw it away. Option A, though, is practical and very logical.
Is it conscience, good old mores, or plain abhorrence to pet gore?
